What we do

Image

Sussex Writes gives students a space to explore their talents and create creative writing communities. The School of English has their full support for Sussex Writes’ creative writing ambition. And none of our amazing work would be possible without the full support of Widening participation. Widening participation impacts young people decisions for the right course and university for them, they support students to succeed in their studies and thrive during their time at university, and help students progress after university. We are widening participation through creative writing.

What we do in workshops....

We can come to schools and conduct our creative writing workshops during school lessons and hours.

Our results

Sussex Writes was first developed in 2016 by Dr Emma Newport. It has grown from a pilot of three undergraduates leading two creative-writing workshops in one school to represent a cross-university initiative, drawing up thirty student tutors from a range of disciplines. We now work with over twenty-five schools across East and West Sussex.

In our first year, our results show that students found our workshops engaging, learnt new things while developing their confidence in and through creative writing.

Sussex Writes has grown and flourished over the years. With our overflowing innovative ideas and passion, we hope that we can continue creating creative writing communities across Sussex.

Young people find that the workshops help them feel “more comfortable” and “less stress[ed]” when writing creatively.
